Covid-19 is a blessing in disguise for the environment. The ongoing pandemic is a juncture for the entire humankind to introspect and retrospect over our unjust acts that have been polluting the environment since some decades.

Owing to lock-down and restricted human intervention, the air and rivers have purified monumentally, wild lives, marine lives are flourishing and nature is blooming.

Under the thrall of the Covid-19 pandemic the world is experiencing positive impacts as blessings.

*The restricted mobility has resulted in a 30% fall in carbon emission. Carbon monoxide level has reduced to 10 ppm. The intensity of particulate matters PM2.5 and PM10 decreased by 43% and 31% respectively, the air quality in the lower atmosphere has improved dramatically healthy.

* Due to restricted consumption of fossil fuels in industries, thermal power stations and air transportation there is 50% reduction in nitrogen oxides; NO2 emission and about 10% reduction in sulphur dioxide emission. Sulphur dioxide and nitrogen oxide present in the aerosols combines with water molecules that precipitate as acid rain causing innumerable health hazards which have been checked to some extent.

*Automobile and industrial shut down has a direct effect on the atmosphere. There is a significant reduction in temperature which has lead to a relatively cooler atmosphere. Humidity has been reduced to normal, which is about 40%. Now we are breathing cooler air.

* There is a 500% decrease in sewage and industrial effluents in the river. The pH of the river has improved by 79%. There is clear and pure water flowing in the river which is leading to reappearance of many aquatic species both surprising and delighting we humans. In India the 2500 km long Ganga the lifeline of the country has been a dump-yard of untreated sewerage and industrial waste and despite of several revival action plans the river still run polluted. But in lock down the river has healed remarkably.

*Noise was reduced up to 35% to 68% all over the world. The noise pollution has remarkably dropped below 60 dB even in crowded cities. Without the nuisance of noise, both elderly and people of all ages are reposing in peace.

*The non-interference of human activities both inland and sea has a significant impact on wildlife. Ecology has restored and wildlife is reclaiming their rights on earth.

Undoubtedly the mere virus has locked the entire human population behind the closed doors but the brighter side of this unbearable quarantine is guiding the collective human consciousness towards a viable and sustainable world. The interim scenario has given us a prospect to apprehend the need for pollution-free environment and perceived urgency of saving it for our future generations.

Let’s create a more sustainable ecosystem for forever existence of every living species of the earth. There are many ways to maintain sustainable ecology. Like-

*It’s time to ideate Sustainable Industrialisation by shifting for less energy-intensive industries. Opt for solar and wind energy over fossil fuel. The industrial effluents must discharge after treatment. Waste recycling and reuse should be put into implementation. The waste of one industry can be used as raw material for others. Electric vehicles should be introduced and replace fossil fuel vehicles. To reduce emissions public transportation should be encouraged.

More ever the use of renewable solar and wind energy to meet our energy consumption is the most feasible solution to tackle environmental pollution. Government’s subsidies and incentives can facilitate the use of renewable energy resources. In a wider action, rich countries can financially help poor developing countries to incorporate the renewable energy system. It needs both finance and manpower. But this can be achieved by mutual cooperation. Hopefully, this engagement will put into place in the COP26 meeting in Glasgow at the end of 2021.

Environmentalists are warning the threat of climate since 30 years but we never show any concern. The current surging environs is just a short pause. We have to adopt more constructive habits and cultivate earnest obligations for nature in order to keep this going in the long run.
